On September 29, 2023, there was a trading day for all financial instruments but a settlement holiday for some. The Maharashtra government shifted the Eid-e-Milad public holiday from September 28 to September 29, 2023. Following the same, the Clearing Corporation also shifted the settlement holiday for Equity and F&O.
Remember, trading was permitted on both days. And to make matters more confusing, it was quarter-end. To explain this, let us first distinguish between a trading holiday and a settlement holiday.
What is a Trading Holiday?
Any day on which there is no trading and no stock exchange activity is referred to as a trading holiday. NSE and BSE holidays are declared by the exchanges in accordance with India’s Securities and Exchange Board (SEBI). A trading holiday occurs when the exchange does not operate the stock market as usual. Commodity market holidays, commonly known as MCX holidays in India, comprise a day when contracts cannot be traded. This implies you will be unable to buy or sell options on the underlying securities on that day.
What is a Settlement Holiday?
A settlement holiday means when stock markets are open but settlement of your trades does not take place as per the usual T+1 cycle, because either the depositaries (NSDL and CDSL) are closed or the banks are closed on respective days. A settlement holiday causes a day’s delay for your shares to get deposited in your Demat account.

When there is a trading holiday, you cannot purchase or sell stocks. A trade settlement holiday occurs when regular trading continues but no equity and/or F&O trades are settled, i.e., stocks or funds due from/to you are not debited/credited to your respective accounts. Holidays for settlement and trading may or may not fall on the same day.
When they diverge, it results in confusion. We had settlement holidays on September 29, 2023 and October 2, 2023. However, the trading holiday was only on October 2, 2023. The weekends of September 30, 2023, and October 1, 2023, were off. What repercussions does this have? All deals entered on September 28, 2023, and September 29, 2023, were resolved on October 3, 2023.
Unsettled deals that have been executed may be a reporting issue. To summarise, September 28, 2023, was a settlement holiday for equity and F&O transactions, but not for currency derivatives. Government securities, money market securities, and rupee interest rate derivatives were also available for settlement through the RBI’s primary market operations.
